#FinanceFridays: Find a Sponsor / Mentor

Do you know what a sponsor or mentor is? It is when you have an endorser of you and your work. A mentor is when you have a (hopefully professional) guide in work and in life.

Sponsors and mentors can be found organically (naturally) or be sought out formally through mentorship programs like the FilExcellence Global Mentorship Program which I was a part of early this year. It was a program that taught me a lot about myself and life, learning through my mentor who was juggling becoming a Certified Professional Accountant while working for a popular U.S. company, all the while completing his advanced degrees in school. We met bi-weekly, virtually through Zoom to discuss topics from Time Management, to Goal-Setting, to Leadership, to Hobbies and I always enjoyed our time together.

My mentee, Tim, was kind, enthusiastic and driven and taught me a lot about what it takes to be determined, courageous and ambitious in work and in life. I was very thankful for our time together.

It is so important to have sponsors and mentors in work and in life - to push us forward and in many ways, for someone to take us under their wing, teaching us new skills, habits and behaviours to improve, grow and succeed.

I encourage all people to seek out sponsors and mentors to consistently have endorsers of you and your work. This can put you on trajectories in life that you may not have had open to you before - opening doors and opportunities where prior, without a sponsor or endorser, may not have been open to you.

When in your life have you had a sponsor or mentor? How did your life improve and/or change with this special relationship in your life? I'd love to know in the comments below! Signed, Filipina Budget Girl.
